Real Madrid star Karim Benzema will be celebrating his Ballon d’Or victory with a remarkable season

It will likely mark the end of an era.

Karim Benzema is the overwhelming favorite to win Monday’s Ballon d’Or. The Real Madrid star’s success could signal that Lionel Messi’s and Cristiano Ronaldo’s hold on the award is finally over.

Ronaldo or Messi has won the Ballon d’Or 12 times in the past 14 years. They also shared it 10 years in succession between 2008 and 2017, with Luka Modric being the only one to win it in 2018.

Messi won the award in 2021 and 2021, while the 2020 edition was canceled by the Covid-19 pandemic. Ronaldo and the Argentine were not on the 30-man shortlist. Both endured difficult seasons at their clubs.

After a remarkable season at Real Madrid, Benzema has been nominated nine times for the award.

He was 34 years old when Real Madrid won the Spanish league title as well as the Champions League.

Benzema scored a total of 44 goals in 46 appearances in the 2021-2022 season. He also finished with 15 goals at the Champions League – France’s highest-scoring competition – and reestablished himself as a member of France’s international team.

Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain, Robert Lewandowski – now at Barcelona after joining The Catalan team from Bayern Munich – and Kevin De Bruyne of Manchester City were also included on the initial 30-man Ballon d’Or shortlist.

The nominations for the women’s award include a trio from England’s Euro 2022 winners – Millie Bright and Beth Mead, while Alexia Putellas, a star in Barcelona and Spain, is up for the Ballon d’Or Feminin, despite not being able to play since last summer’s Euros due to injury.

Benzema also started the season well with five goals in his 10 first appearances and a goal in Sunday’s El Clasico win against archrival Barcelona.

Benzema, who was second-fiddle to Ronaldo at Real Madrid for many years, has been a top striker in European football in recent years.

Since Ronaldo left Juventus for Juventus in 2018, Benzema scored at least 27 goals. He was Real Madrid’s biggest threat.

Last season, he was the best in the iconic white kit of the Spanish giant. He helped the team to an unprecedented 14th Champions League title as well as a dominant La Liga victory.

This award, which is one of the most prestigious in football, has been restructured from previous years.

Usually, players were evaluated based on their performance over a calendar year however, this season they will be judged based on football season. In this case, it is the 2021-22 campaign.

Each of the 100 top FIFA nations picks five top players. The player who ranks first on the voter’s form gets six points. The third gets four points. Fourth gets three points. Fifth gets one point.
