A £71m community campus in north-east Scotland has been delayed by at least 18 months after Robertson pulled out.
The family-run contractor was appointed by Aberdeenshire Council as preferred bidder for the Peterhead Community Campus, which will bring four existing schools onto one site.
The development was expected to open in 2025 but the due date was pushed to summer 2026 when plans were submitted in October. The project faced delays due to supply chain issues and market volatility, according to the council.
The council said yesterday (20 August) the scheme was now unlikely to be completed until January 2028, after Robertson Construction told it that it was withdrawing from the project.
Robertson said it made the “difficult decision” to withdraw from the project after a long period of “collaborative value engineering”.
A spokesperson added: “As a responsible business, we need to ensure that any project that we undertake meets certain criteria for our customers, ourselves and our supply chain members to achieve successful project outcomes.
“Aberdeenshire Council remains an important customer and we look forward to working with them again in the future.”
The scheme was one of the first projects pledged from Scottish government funding in a £1bn schools investment programme announced in 2019.
An Aberdeenshire Council spokesperson said that it “remains committed to building a new community campus for Peterhead” but needs to reconsider its options for progressing the project. They added the council would engage with the construction sector on likely costs and timescales.
